The fur is flying, “…in the case of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America against Random House…” according to The Independent Publishing Magazine. SFWA addressed RH’s digital-only imprint, Hydra, “If Hydra is willing to assume the costs long assumed by publishers rather than attempting to shift those costs to authors, and is willing to pay advances in line with SFWA minimum rates at the very least, we will be willing to reconsider it as a qualifying market, and as a suitable home for writers. Until that time, however, we cannot do either, and will warn writers about Hydra.” Full article here…

Three big names in the agency field are pulling together to form Foreword Literary. Laurie McLeanGordon Warnock and Pam van Hylckama Vlieg share with Media Bistro, “We are a brand new type of author representative. Sure, we’ll sell books to publishers and sell subsidiary rights to movie studios, foreign publishers, magazines, audiobook companies, etc. But we’ll also work with a network of affiliates such as self-publishers, cover designers, app creators, web series developers, comic book producers, social media marketers, publicity experts, teachers, game designers, speaker bureaus, and many, many others to offer our clients a fully-fleshed world of possibilities for their creativity.” Read more…

What a tangle with Hydra and SFWA. I’ll have to read that all again, but new writers should be careful – in business some similar “partnering” deals set people up for problems down the road. Look twice before you leap seems to be so necessary with everything these days?
THanks for keeping us up to date

watchful eyes, always, seems like we have to be on guard with everyone these days, Phil…keep looking back, for those backstabbers, but don’t forget to be forward focused. Wait, that’s advice for me, cause this week was a reminder of how people’s bite is worse than their bark, hmmmm. ;)
